The city of Boston heard the roars from the 40,000 in attendance following Marco Sturm’s go-ahead goal in overtime for the Bruins to battle past the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 New Years Day at Fenway. Sturm was rightfully ecstatic after creating hockey’s first walk-off inside America’s most beloved ballpark, saying “It’s probably going to be my most memorable goal ever and I’m going to enjoy it.”
Both the Bruins and Flyers were unable to produce any goals in the opening period. Danny Syvret eventually found the net 4:42 into the second block. Fans and players alike were worried they wouldn’t be able to celebrate a Bruins score in Boston’s first Winter Classic. Mark Recchi then came through in the clutch with 2:18 left in regulation, capitalizing on a power play opportunity to tie it up and continue the outdoor festivities.
Goalie Tim Thomas supplied a pair of thrilling saves in overtime, proving himself worthy to represent team USA in the upcoming Olympic Games in Vancouver. Soon after the B’s took control on the other end to wrap yet another unforgettable contest at the home of the Boston Red Sox. The Bruins are now looking ahead to their next game against the New York Rangers tonight at 7:00 PM. Boston Bruins tickets are now available with us at Ace!
