NHL Eyes Michigan Stadium for 2013 Winter Classic

The NHL is currently finalizing details for next season’s Winter Classic, eyeing the University of Michigans “Big House” as the priority setting. The 2013 New Year’s contest will feature the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. The 110,000 capacity venue is the largest college football stadium in the country, located 43 miles west of Detroit.

Negotiations between the NHL, the city of Ann Arbor and the Red Wings have yet to be completed. There are also talks of bringing the event to Detroit’s Comerica Park, the home stadium for the Detroit Tigers. This year’s Winter Classic welcomed a record 46,967 fans to watch the New York Rangers edge the home team Philadelphia Flyers 3-2. Check back for additional NHL updates.
