Multiple sources have confirmed that Fenway Park is in the works to host an exhibition soccer game between Liverpool FC and AS Roma. The match would serve as part of a nationwide tournament, also planning to feature Chelsea FC and Celtic FC in locations that include Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field. The preseason contest at Fenway will likely be scheduled for late June – early July.
“Throughout its 100-year history, Fenway Park has seen some of the best in athletic competition,” said Fenway Sports Management president Sam Kennedy. “And while we are exploring the possibility of hosting a Liverpool match – which certainly rises to that level – nothing has been finalized.”
Both Liverpool FC and AS Roma have ties to the Red Sox and Fenway Park. Liverpool was purchased in 2010 by Fenway Sports Group, headed by Red Sox owner John Henry. AS Roma is owned by a group involving Red Sox minority owner Thomas DiBenedetto and Celtics part owner James Pallotta.
