Patriots go-to wide out Wes Welker recently emphasized his sole focus to the media on Sunday despite facing an expiring contract after Super Bowl XLVI. The 4x Pro Bowler is due to make $2 million in the final season of his five-year, $18 million deal.
“I am fully concentrated on this game and what we have to do, but I plan on being back,” said Welker. “This is all stuff that we can address at another point. It can be a story after the season is over, but right now, we are just concentrating on this game and what we have to do to win this game. If you win this game, all of that other stuff takes care of itself.”
Welker is the league leader in total receptions over the past five years with 554. The Patriots will likely put a franchise tag on the seven-year veteran if he and the team can’t agree on a contract extension by the start of next season.
