Billy Elliot The Musical is coming to Boston’s Opera House July 24-August 19. Written by Lee Hall , the musical uses music from Sir Elton John. Based on the 2000 film of the same name, the musical premiered in London’s West End in 2005 then opened on Broadway in November 2008.
The show won four Lawrence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, as well as ten Tony Awards, that include Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for the three actors who portrayed Billy.
The show centers on a young boy, Billy, who lost his mother and decides to dance ballet rather than box. Based during the UK Miners’ Strike in 1984, Billy’s personal struggles compare to the politics of the time.
Hit songs from the show include “The Stars Look Down,” “Expressing Yourself,” Swan Lake,” and “Electricity.”
Billy Elliot The Musical will begin its 15-city tour on February 29 in Fort Lauderdale.
