Lester Signs 5 Year Extension With Sox

According to Yahoo’s Jeff Passan, Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester has signed a 5-year, $30 million extension, which also includes  a $13 million option for 2014. In a market with ever-increasing price tags on lefties, the move keeps Lester out of free agency for an extra two years. After battling cancer during his rookie year in 2006, Lester returned in late 2007 and had an impressive postseason; including a win in the clinching game 4 of the World Series. In his breakout 2008 campaign Lester went 16-6 with a 3.2 ERA, and no-hit the Kansas City Royals on May 19th. This deal is double that of Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona, who signed a 4-year $15 million contract.

This season, he is expected to be near the top of the rotation, and is considered an integral part of Boston’s deep pitching staff.
