Curtis Granderson provided the go ahead score in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo-shot to right en route to a New York Yankees 6-3 victory over the Detriot Tigers at home to start off their upcoming 162-game regular season campaign at 1-0. Mark Teixeira, notoriously known for his slow starts in April, capitalized on their early March debut with a three-run blast to right in the third inning for the initial 3-1 lead. “I’ve been petitioning the league to start in March for years. Finally they let us start in March because everybody knows my Aprils,” he said. “It’s great to start this way…Last year was awful, it was embarrassing.”

CC Sabathia let up a scattered six hits and three runs through six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. Justin Verlander produced similar numbers but couldn’t lean on his bullpen from there to harness the heavy New York lineup. The Yankees have two games this weekend against the Tigers before they play host to the Minnesota Twins in a four-game series that kicks off Monday, April 4th in the Bronx.
