Yankees Drop 2 Out of 3 Against Mets

Losers in 5 of their last 6 games, the Yankees lost hometown bragging rights as the Mets won the first Subway Series matchup of the year, taking 2 of 3 from the struggling Yankees.  The series opened on a positive note for the Yankees who got a strong performance from starting pitcher Javier Vazquez who pitched six innings of one hit ball before taking a line drive off of his finger. The Yankees went on to win 2-1 with Mariano Rivera locking up his 8th save of the year.

After starting the season like a potential Cy Young candidate, Phil Hughes looked vulnerable for the second straight outing eventually taking his first loss on the year in Saturday’s matchup against the Mets.  They Yankees stranded 13 runners in their 5-3 loss while Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey took command on the mound earning his 6th win of the year.

Sunday night’s series finale featured the marquee pitching matchup of C.C. Sabathia against Johan Santana. For the second straight game it was the Mets who pulled through in a close game. K-Rod ended the night with a dramatic 9th inning strikeout against A-Rod who represented the go ahead run at the plate.
