NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman just recently announced that the Pittsburgh Penguins will host the Washington Capitals in the 2011 Winter Classic. The fourth annual New Year’s day contest is scheduled to take place at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 65,050 capacity stadium will provide the biggest stage the Classic has ever seen. The game will also feature the most recognized individual rivalry the NHL has to offer with Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby and Washington’s Alex Ovechkin.
2011 will be showcasing another NHL matchup in the elements Sunday, February 20th between the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens at McMahon Stadium. The first outdoor NHL game was in 2003 when the Canadiens faced off against the Edmonton Oilers.
