Red Sox vs Yankees Matchup Notes, June 2009

By on June 9, 2009 in ,

Tale of two Becketts: After a rough start to the season Josh Beckett has been on fire over his last three starts, going 2-0 with a 0.40 ERA. When opponents have been able to hit him – they havent been able to do much damage as he’s held them to a downright stingy .130 batting average against. He matches up against former teammate and fellow flamethrower A.J. Burnett on Tuesday 6/9.

1st Place in the AL East up for grabs: Depending on the score of tonight’s Rays / Yankees game – the Red Sox and Yankees are again in 1st and 2nd place in the AL East. The Yankees have caught fire lately going 14-6 in their last 20 games. The Red Sox very much need to win this very important series to try to climb back into first.

The Best Rivalry in sports: Everyone knows the stories – Babe Ruth, Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone, Dave Roberts, David Ortiz, and Bill Mueller.  What everyone may not know is since 2002 the two teams have played 136 times – with each team winning exactly 68 times! It’s hard to get a more even matchup than that!

Penny pinching – Brad Penny had settled into a groove of good starts before his last tough outing. If he’s going to right the ship – it will be a big task (quite literally) as he takes on former Cy Young award winner C.C. Sabathia on Thursday.
