“Wicked” is a vital word in every New Englander’s vocabulary, but this summer Bostonians will be saying the word in a different, yet just as superlative context. The book-turned-musical Wicked will be making its return to the Boston Opera House this September, and the play is bound to be a wicked good show.
Wicked is a cleverly entertaining tale telling one author’s imaginative spin on the back story of the characters we know so well from the 1939 classic Wizard of Oz, with the subtitle “So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.” Elphaba, future Wicked Witch of the West, is born green and shunned from society. At college, she meets the ever-popular, positive and pink Glinda, future Good Witch of the North. Elphaba has a knack for magic, so the headmistress of the college sends her and combative colleague Glinda to the Emerald City to help the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. However, the wizard is not so wonderful and is segregating the talking animals in Oz from the rest of society. Elphaba is enraged because she can identify with the animals–so she speaks out against the wizard and defies him. In this untold prequel to the Wizard of Oz, with funny little references to the original tale that succeeds it, the audience that once cheered at the sight of the Wicked Witch melting is now enlightened by the disheartening childhood that the little green girl so bravely endured.
Wicked is currently the 18th longest-running musical on Broadway and the 28th longest-running show in theatre history. The show has broken box office records around the world, holding weekly-gross-takings records in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. Both the West End production and the North American tour have been seen by over two million patrons. The show was nominated for ten 2004 Tony Awards, winning those for Best Actress, Scenic Design and Costume Design. Wicked will be in Boston on tour this September at the Opera House for three shows on the 2nd and 3rd with a cast featuring Donna Vivino, Chandra Lee Schwartz, Randy Danson and Richard Cline.
