Depleted Sox Look to Control AL East

Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to start on the hill for Boston tonight against Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza as the Red Sox look to win their eighth consecutive contest at home. The Sox were able to pull within one-game of AL East leading New York Yankees following yesterday’s 8-5 victory. Despite a long list of injuries between Dustin Pedroia (broken foot), Victor Martinez (broken left thumb), Josh Beckett (back), Jacoby Ellsbury (ribs), Mike Lowell (hip), Jeremy Hermida (ribs) and Jed Lowrie (mononucleosis), the rest of the lineup has proceeded to win 10-of -13 over the past two weeks.

As the Red Sox keep rolling the Rays are hoping to regain their rhythm, losing their last 3-of-4 to push them back into third place. Disregarding their recent drought, Rays manager Joe Maddon insists the race will be close with all three rivals fighting to the end.

“Just going to be the same old dogfight, man. It’s interesting, it’s a lot of fun,” he said. “I really anticipated or expected that we would be among two or three teams together – Boston, ourselves and the Yankees – so none of this is surprising.” After tonight’s game the Red Sox and Rays will meet again July 5th-7th at Tropicana Field.
