Alex Rodriguez came through in the eighth inning with a two-run shot to right to give his New York Yankees the 4-2 edge over the Seattle Mariners yesterday in the Bronx. The 48-30 Yankees avoided the series sweep with the recent W, keeping them on top of the AL East Division by 1.5 games. Mark Teixeira grounded out to shortstop in the first but scored Derek Jeter for New York to gain the initial 1-0 lead. Robinson Cano homered in the fourth to right-center, supplying the only source of offensive production in six innings. Seattle rallied in the top of the eighth to tie it up and set the stage for A-Rod to take over from there.
CC Sabathia was stellar on the mound, letting up just two runs and five hits in eight innings of work. “CC threw a great game,” said Rodriguez. “Anytime you go eight innings and they only score two runs you want to reward him with a win.” Sabathia has now won six straight to earn an impressive 10-3 record and 3.33 ERA. The Yankees are next scheduled to host the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend before traveling to Oakland and Seattle before the All-Star break. New York Yankees tickets are now available!
