Former Red Sox pitcher Frank Castillo was found dead Monday in Bartlett Lake near Phoenix.
Castillo was out on a boat ride with his family when he jumped in the water to go for a swim. However, Castillo never returned and his body was found dead hours later.
Castillo played for the Red Sox from 2001 to 2004. In a total of 49 games started, he had a 16-24 record.
Before playing for the Sox, 13-year major league veteran played with the Chicago Cubs. He spent seven years in Chicago from 1991-1997. He then bounced around with a few teams before settling in with the Red Sox in 2001.
“It was shocking,” said Brian McRae, his former Cubs teammate. “You don’t expect to see your teammates’ name on the bottom scroll of ESPN saying he drowned at 44 years old.”
