Multiple sources have confirmed that Shaquille O’Neal has agreed to join the Boston Celtics for the veterans minimum of $1.4 million. The length of the contract is debatable due Shaq’s push for a two-year deal. The Celtics were at the top of his list this offseason alongside the Atlanta Hawks. The 15X All-Star will give Boston more depth inside with a side of additional championship experience. At the age of 38, he averaged 12 points and 6.7 rebounds last season as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Shaq is certainly qualified to fill the extra position at center to coincide with Jermaine O’Neal while Kendrick Perkins recovers from knee surgery. During a segment on Monday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his television show Shaq Vs, the Big man expressed his desire to play for a real title contender if the opportunity were to present itself. “For me, it’s been a real thinking process,” he said. “I came into the league very graciously and want to go out very graciously. My main thought was I would like to play for a winning franchise, somebody that’s used to winning, somebody that keeps winning. Hopefully, I’ll make my decision here in the next one or two days.”
The Celtics are set to kick off their 2010-2011 campaign at home against the revamped Miami Heat. Christmas day will showcase a rematch of Last year’s Eastern Conference Finals between the Celtics and Magic at the new Amway Arena. All NBA schedules are expected to be released by next week.
