Red Sox Avoid Sweep, Down Orioles 6-3

Clay Buchholz allowed in three runs on a scattered eight hits and racked up seven strikeouts to lift his Boston Red Sox past the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 yesterday at Camden Yards. One of the only bright spots on the pitching staff this year, Buchholz earned his 11th win of the season while helping the Red Sox avoid what would have been a disastrous three-game sweep in Baltimore.

“He brought the competitive spirit to a new level tonight,” said Boston manager Bobby Valentine. “They were jumping on his early pitches, he got down early. But when he saw we had some resiliency in our offense, he shut the door. He shut it quick.”

The Sox found themselves behind early but rallied in the fifth and sixth innings for five runs. Carl Crawford, Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez, Cody Ross and Scott Podsednik all contributed multiple hits for Boston. The club will next travel to the Bronx this weekend for a three-game series against the New York Yankees before returning home to host the LA Angels for three games starting Tuesday, August 21st.
