Yanks Handle Tigers, Reclaim AL East

Robinson Cano belted a double and two-run homer in New York’s nine-run sixth inning as the high power offense went on to demolish the depleted Detroit Tigers 11-5 yesterday at Yankee Stadium. Cano has homered three times in three games in the cleanup spot while Alex Rodriguez remains sidelined with a strained calf. “He has been tremendous,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “He’s a dangerous hitter and he had a big day again today. We’ve been without Alex for a few days and he’s stepped up. He’s stepped up all year for us.”

Cano, Nick Swisher and Austin Kearns notched multiple hits for New York as Phil Hughes remained steady through six innings on the mound. The 24-year old right-hander let up just two runs on four hits to earn his 15th win of the season. The Yankees are now a game up on the Tampa Bay Rays and six games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East Division standings. They are next set to welcome in the Seattle Mariners for three games before hitting the road to face the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox
