Yanks Cruise Past A’s, Lead Division

Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher contributed home runs in last night’s 9-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics for the New York Yankees to claim the top spot in the AL East. The 82-50 Yanks currently hold the division advantage over the Tampa Bay Rays by one with the Boston Red Sox trailing eight games behind. Phil Hughes was sure to thank the lineup after his five innings of work on the mound, where he let up four hits and two runs on four walks.

Hughes (16-6) has won four of his last six despite yesterday’s struggles. He is ranked second in wins in the American League behind teammate CC Sabathia (18-5). “The thing that made us happy is he went out there and grinded it out,” said outfielder Nick Swisher. “You want pitchers with heart…He gave us a chance to win. That’s the reason he’s second in the AL in wins behind the big man.” The Yankees are next set to matchup with the A’s this Wednesday and Thursday before hosting the Toronto Blue Jays for a three games this weekend. New York Yankees tickets are now available!
