Opera cross-over Andrea Bocelli has made a name for himself as one of the most inspiring and transcending voices of the century. Bocelli’s latest album release Carmen: Duets & Arias (2010) features tracks from the opera Carmen which Bocelli recorded in 2005 and later starred in as Don José opposite Hungarian mezzo-soprano Ildikó Komlósi as Carmen, in Rome, for four nights in 2008. Bocelli released the complete opera recording of Carmen, in Italy, in the same year, with international release featuring the opera’s main tracks this year.

Andrea Bocelli, a native of Lajatico, Italy, suffered a blow to the head at 12 years old which in cooperation with glaucoma, leaving him blind for the coming years. His disability did little to stint his passion for learning though, as he earned a law degree from the University of Pisa. Bocelli did not begin his singing career until the late 1980s, when he began performing in piano bars throughout Italy. With one of the most exciting voices in contemporary opera, Bocelli has teamed up over the years with some of the best voices in the business. Opera, however, represents only one side of his musical persona. Bocelli has been equally successful as a pop ballad singer, having recorded duets with Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman and Eros Ramazzotti. Al Jarreau, who sang with Bocelli during “The Night of Proms” tour in 1995, praised Bocelli, saying, “I have had the honor to sing with the most beautiful voice in the world.”

Bocelli’s first two albums, Andrea Bocelli (1994) and Bocelli (1996), showcased his operatic singing. With his fourth album, Romanza (1997), Bocelli turned to pop music and continued with the pop balladry on Sogno (1999), featuring a duet with Celine Dion on “The Prayer”, which sold more than ten million copies, and earned a Golden Globe award and Grammy nomination. Andrea has worked with the likes of Pavarotti and has sung for the Pope. One of his best-known songs, “Vivo Per Lei,” meaning “I Live For Her”, has been translated many times by dozens of artists. Andrea Bocelli is the voice of a generation, providing a fresh, elegant combination of poignant pop and overstated opera over a catalog of 14 studio albums and 8 complete opera recordings. Bocelli will be at the TD Garden on Sunday December 5th, singing for one of the largest audiences he’s faced in New England.
