Jacoby Ellsbury hit a single to right to score Mike Aviles for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth, leading the Boston Red Sox to win over the New York Yankees 4-3 yesterday at Fenway Park. The Sox victory pushed New York back into a tie with the Baltimore Orioles for AL East lead.
Celebrating his 29th birthday with the Fenway faithful, Ellsbury produced four hits in total and one to cap the night in dramatic fashion. “That was a great feeling,” he said. “The fans were great tonight. They were into the game, energetic, and we just want to keep putting on a show for them.”
Derek Jeter put the Yanks up 3-2 in the top of the sixth with a ground rule double just inside of Pesky’s pole. Dustin Pedroia followed up with a solo shot over the Green Monster soon after to set the stage for Ellsbury in the end. The Red Sox and Yankees will square off again just two more times this season, first tonight at 7:10 PM. Regular season Boston Red Sox tickets are still available here at Ace!
