Get ready Boston, the Celtic punk rock hometown heroes are making a stop at the Pavilion before the end of their summer concert series this Friday, the 21st. Longtime locals the Murphy’s have been together for 16 years originally forming in Quincy, MA. The band signed to famous punk rock label Hellcat Records (owned by Rancid lead singer Tim Armstrong) and released some of their best work while with them including 1999’s The Gang’s All Here and 2001’s Sing Loud, Sing Proud. The band toured constantly and became known for their legendary St. Patricks Day shows.
In 2004 they reworked the famous Boston Red Sox Royal Rooters song “Tessie”, a recording that seemed like a good luck charm for the team that year at they were finally able break their 86 year streak and win a World Series Title. The band continued to win the hearts of the locals when their song “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” (off of 2005’s The Warriors Code) was played (more like blared) over the opening scenes of Boston-based gangster movie The Departed giving the opening credits what I thought a well deserved edge. And as if that wasn’t enough to show how much the band loves their hometown in 2008 bass player and founding member Ken Casey re-opened the famous Third Base Saloon, this time under the name McGreevy’s, in honor of the original owner and most vocal “Royal Rooter”, Michael T. McGreevy.
Since 2007 the band has been releasing music through their own label, Born & Bred. That same year they released the album The Meanest of Times featuring the hit single “The State of Massachusetts” which helped bring their album to No. 20 on the Billboard charts. That was the bands biggest selling album until 2011’s Going Out In Style, which earned them a No. 6 spot on the charts, officially their highest selling album to date. Truly a band that knows when to give back, they performed at Fenway Park for two days in 2011 eventually releasing the concert as a live album.
Be sure to catch these local favorites at one of the few final concerts of the summer and grab the best seat in the house right here!
