Boston designated hitter David Ortiz brought in three of his four RBI’s with a homer in the ninth inning, leading the Red Sox to blow out the Kansas City Royals 9-2. Even though the fan favorite slugger got off to a slow start and is hitting .234 for the season, he has really turned it around for these last couple of months. This year Papi has knocked 25 homers and has drove in 88 RBI’s.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona knew Ortiz would eventually find his swing, and the organization couldn’t ask for a better time heading into the 2009 playoffs. “I remember saying look up in the end, his batting average is going to be lower and he has to live with that,” Francona said. “As long as he doesn’t walk to the plate looking at that, he’ll be OK. That’s what has happened.”
The Royals were only able to score two runs off Josh Beckett despite scattering 12 hits during his six innings pitched. Boston looks forward to one more game at Kansas City before heading to New York to match up against the first place Yankees.
