Red Sox Aim to Play Spoiler Tonight vs Yankees

The Boston Red Sox will wrap up their regular season tonight against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Despite another frustrating season in the books for Boston, the team will have a shot to end on a high note with a victory tonight against their longtime AL East rivals.

If the Sox can defeat New York while the Orioles pull off a win tonight at Tampa Bay, it would force a one-game playoff between the teams on Thursday in Baltimore. The winner will be awarded the AL East title and the loser of that game would be forced to play a one-game playoff against either the Texas Rangers or Oakland Athletics.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will take the mound for the Red Sox against New York’s Hiroki Kuroda. Matsuzaka is 1-6 with a 7.68 earned run average in 10 starts and hasn’t pitched since September 19th due to a string of poor performances. “I figured that we had six guys who were going to pitch at the end here and it was either have Zach Stewart pitch the last game or Daisuke pitch the last game,” said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine. “I felt with extra rest that he’d have the best chance at being the best he could be.” Game time is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
