Rangers RW Marian Gaborik was able to net two goals in the third period and lead New York past Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals 4-3 yesterday at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. The Rangers were down a goal until 8:09 into the 3rd when Gaborik tacked one on the board (assisted by Vaclav Prospal). Three minutes later it was Gaborik again, this time on a power play effort in favor of the Rangers. “It’s why players like him are so special,” said New York’s Chris Drury of Gaborik. “They can change the game on one play – and on one shot.”
After last year’s post-season when the Capitals came back from a 3-1 deficit on New York to further advance, the Rangers showed up for revenge today and certainly proved themselves as major contenders for 2009-10. The Atlantic Division is jam packed with talent between New York, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. The Rangers are now scheduled to play on Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks, a team that just handled the highly favored Boston Bruins 6-1.
