2009 World Series Preview

By on October 27, 2009 in

The 2009 MLB World Series will officially begin tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium (7:57 PM).  The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies are no strangers to postseason competition. The Phillies will be contending their World Series title as the Yanks attempt to redeem themselves after a poor 2008 regular season showing. Despite their previous drought last year, New York has proven most successful over the years with 26 total championships and 40 World Series appearances (not to mention their 103-59 2009 regular season record).

The first two games in the Bronx are expected to be nothing short of thrilling. The opening matchup will feature club aces and former teammates Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia. CC won the AL Cy Young in 2007 but Lee claimed the award last season.

Phillies veteran Pedro Martinez will get the nod to take the hill for game 2 (Yankees pitcher TBD). The Former Boston Red Sox right-hander and the Yankees have certainly developed quite a relationship over the years. New York fans should be riled up for this one especially.

“I think he’s still got quite a bit left,” said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel of Pedro. “I was watching those playoff games that he pitched in. His velocity was sitting 87 to 91 mph, and he was even better than that at Dodger Stadium. That was a couple years ago when he pitched those games against the Yankees. He knows how to pitch.” Martinez is 11-11 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 career starts against the Yankees.
