Cinderella Comes To Broadway In 2013

A new production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will arrive on Broadway in 2013 with previews set for January 21 prior to Opening Night on February 21 at New York’s Broadway Theatre. Though being a television musical classic since 1957 and a popular stage musical as well, it has never been staged on Broadway until now.

Along with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics and the original book by Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical includes a new book written by Douglas Carter Beane. The fresh take on the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella offers a new romantic twist on the makeover story of a maid-turned-princess, ultimately leading to Cinderella saving the Prince in the end. The book mixes comedy and wit with the classic elements to tell the story of a girl forced to serve her stepmother and stepsisters until her fairy godmother gives her the chance to go to a prince’s ball.

“They always say in Hollywood there are only five stories,” says Beane. “Cinderella is one of them. How many books or movies do you know where they say it’s a real Cinderella story? And the reason is it is so emotionally powerful.” Stars Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana will bring the tale to life as Cinderella and the Prince.
