New England Patriot’s defensive end Jermaine Cunningham has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
The suspension was announced by the league on Monday but the substance Cunningham is accused of using has not been revealed. He will not play this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. He is permitted to return to the Patriots’ roster on December 24. He will be eligible for the regular-season finale against the Dolphins in Foxborough.
The 24-year old has recorded 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks so far this season. Though he isn’t the most flashiest player, he has been one of the Patriots’ most consistent defensive players. But now someone else will have to step up to the plate.
“The next guy’s got to just step up and be ready to play,” safety Steve Gregory said. “The game of football is a physical game. Guys go down. Guys get hurt. Everyone on your roster has to be ready to step up and play at any given moment, so all of our guys treat it that way.”
